Roulette- a Game of Chance
Roulette, a game of chance played in gambling casinos throughout the world. Standard equipment for the game consists of a table, into which is set a rotating wheel, and a small ivory or plastic ball. All bets are made against the house, and there is no limit to the number of players who may bet.
In American roulette, the wheel is divided into 38 compartments. The numbers 1-36, half of which are red and the other half black, are arranged on the wheel as illustrated in the accompanying diagram. There are also two green compartments, marked 0 and 00, directly opposite each other on the wheel. On the rim of the wheel is a groove, in which the ball is spun in the opposite direction of the rotating wheel. In the center of the wheel are randomly placed ridges, so that when the ball slows and drops from the groove, it bounces in the center of the wheel before falling into one of the numbered compartments.
The standard American roulette table has a betting layout at one end of the table and the wheel at the other end. Another style of table, the double-finish table, has a structure at every end and the wheel set between them. The betting layout is marked with spaces that correspond to each number on the wheel.
There are also spaces on the layout for players to indicate bets such as "red,""black,""odd,""even,""1–18,""19–36,""first 12,""special 12," and "third 12." Other possible bets include "column,""line,""split,""street," and "square."

The house has an advantage above and beyond that of chance over the player on all bets. When a player bets on a single number, the actual odds against the number appearing on a spin of the wheel are 37 to 1, but the house pays only 35 to 1 on a winning bet. The advantage applies on other bets because of the 0 and 00. Because they are neither red nor black, odd nor even, high nor low, and do not fall within the first, second, and third 12 numbers, or within any column, the house wins all bets except those placed on the winning 0 or 00.
The roulette wheel used in European casinos has only one compartment marked 0. Therefore, the house advantage over the player is reduced. Although the betting rules are close to those of American roulette, there is one major difference. When the zero appears, only "straight" bets on the zero and the three-number and four-number line bets that include 0 are paid.
In some casinos bets on odd, even, red, black, high, and low are imprisoned—that is, the bet stands and the outcome is determined by the next spin of the wheel, or the house collects half of all such bets immediately.

Although many systems have been devised to win at roulette, none can override the advantage afforded the house by the appearance of the 0 and 00 on the wheel.
Roulette is a game in which one or more players gamble against the bank, or house, playing on a rectangular table in the center of which is a wheel whose perimeter is non consecutively numbered 1 through 36 and zero and double zero. Half the numbers are in red and half in black, except for the zero and double zero, which are in green. Each number has a corresponding slot. A ball is spinned by a croupier into a wheel after going in a direction, afterwards which goes into the opposite direction . The moment the ball stops , that slot is said to hold the successful number. On either side of the wheel is a layout on which bets are placed. Betting and winning on any single number pays 35-to-1. A bet on two numbers, one of which wins, pays 17-to-1. Betting on three numbers, with one winning, pays 11-to-1; four numbers pays 8-to-1; six pays 5-to-1. Several bets with payoffs of 2-to-1 are possible, including bets on the separated horizontal groups of numbers (1–12, 13–24, and 25–36), and on the three vertical columns of numbers. Although the payoff on a single number bet is 35-to-1, the odds against winning are actually 37-to-1, giving the bank an average yield of 5.26 percent—higher than almost any other casino game. Roulette probably originated in the late 18th century and has become a fixture in most gambling houses.
